11: Walmart Case

Discrimination of women in the workplace even today is rampant. In many places it is due to culture and lack of diversity policies within the workplace. In the case of Walmart, the women of Walmart have banded together to file a class-action lawsuit against Walmart for discrimination and unfair disparity on promotions and wages among their male counterparts.

Breaking the culture is very hard. Comparing the case to the norms in countries like Japan, women have a harder time climbing the corporate rather compared to their male counterparts.

Enterprises of today should realize the need for improving their diversification policies and policing of its implementation. This problem has long been recurring and has been gaining more momentum at every iteration of each demonstration.

In my current employment, this issue has not been present, our corporation considers men and women of equal standing, and merits for promotion are based on performance. If this issue does come up in the future, as a future Lasallian business leader, I believe diversity issues like this need to be addressed quickly. Employees regardless of gender or race should be treated equally especially on determining wages, mentoring, and promotions. Workers should be equally judged, basing on their performance especially when evaluating for a promotion and not because of their gender or race. Organizational policies should be in place and avenues for feedback (through feedback forms, or union meetings) should be present from the ground up so that political views over diversity are known to corporate leaders and could be addressed quickly in due time.
